Voting for a New ISO Technical Committee on Management Consultancy Services

Ballot open until December 2022

Trends in management consultancy (such as digitalization, sustainability, accountability, agility and many more) need to be tackled not only by the consulting industry, but in co-operation with clients, academia and other stakeholders interested in further developing management consultancy. An effective platform for exchange of ideas and issues in this field is the ISO umbrella.

This is why the consulting profession recently launched a proposal to ISO to create a new Technical Committee on management consultancy services – now open for a ballot among all ISO member countries.

Please take a look at the enclosed proposal, and get back to your national standards body until December 2022 to express your interest in creating a new field of activity (ISO Technical Committee). The ballot is open for all stakeholders (consultants, clients, academia, others) to mark quality and excellence in management consultancy.

ISO 20700 CMC-Global Self-Declaration Check List Training

CMC-Global (ICMCI) has developed a self-declaration checklist to the ISO 20700:2017 Guidelines for management consultancy services, for management consultants in demonstrating their work according to the ISO 20700 to their clients.

In order to provide practical and hands on support, CMC-Global (ICMCI) accredits their Institutes (IMC) to conduct respective trainings for their management consultants and CMCs.

ISO 20700 One Year Anniversary – Launch Event June 6 in Vienna

On June 6, 2018 the management consulting industry celebrated the first anniversary of the ISO 20700 publication, one year after the release of this standard. The international consulting industry met their stakeholders to discuss the status and how to proceed with implementing ISO 20700:2017 worldwide within the different sectors of the consulting industry, as well as with client representatives and organizations, academia and other stakeholders.

This event was organized and hosted by ICMCI The International Council of Management Consulting Institutes (initiator and sponsor of the development of ISO 20700), together with Austrian Standards (representing ISO).

Industry representatives, as well as international representatives of customer organizations and stakeholder of the consulting industry, were invited to this event to discuss the status and future of this standard.

Representatives from all over the world, Canada, Europe, Middle East, China – in total more than 20 countries, presented and discussed their viewpoint on ISO 20700, also addressing the needs and expectations of the different regions worldwide to make ISO 20700 successful and recognized by the stakeholders of the consulting industry.

100 % Approval – Ballot on prEN 20700

The public Enquiry Process for CEN members to approve the draft prEN ISO 20700 as a European Standard, ended in March 2018. On April 5, the voting result of the CEN Enquiry was announced, with 100% approval (National Members having abstained are not counted in this vote).

Next Steps

Due to CEN internal regulations the final ratification of EN ISO 20700 is expected in 3 months. CEN TC 381 expects the publication of EN ISO 20700 at CEN level mid 2018, superseding EN 16114.

EN 16114 voting: Adoption to EN ISO 20700

ISO 20700 describes world-class ‘best practices’ in terms of professional management consultancy services. Considering, that

• ISO 20700 “Guidelines for management consultancy services” was published in June 2017,
• for the same scope the European Standard EN 16114 “Management consultancy services” was issued in September 2011,
• and even noting, that service standards are voluntary in their application,

both standards can be applied for delivering management consultancy services,

i.e. the EN 16114 in European CEN member countries and ISO 20700 in those countries outside of CEN.

 

Therefore, in September 2017 CEN member countries initiated a new Work Item (project) to the program of the Committee CEN TC 381 in order to adopt ISO 20700:2017 as EN ISO 20700, superseding EN 16114:2011. The voting results to initiate the Work Item are as follows.

Voting Results

September 2017: Agreement to start a new Work Item (project) in CEN TC 381 in order to adopt ISO 20700:2017 as EN ISO 20700, superseding EN 16114:2011:

• Number of positive votes: 12
• Number of negative votes: 0
• Number of abstentions: 9

Further Procedure

This new Work Item is the adoption of ISO 20700 as an European Standard EN ISO 20700, replacing EN 16114. The CEN TC 381 Secretary

• in 2017: prepares the public Enquiry Process for CEN members, i.e. prEN ISO 20700, and submits this to CEN-CENELEC Management Centre (CCMC) to launch the CEN Enquiry,
• in 2018: CCMC launches the CEN Enquiry prEN ISO 20700, which includes the approval of said EN, to the CEN members for voting by weighted vote (time duration 3 months),
• coordinates the final process of ratification of EN ISO 20700 (expected mid 2018).

To summarize: CEN TC 381 expects the adoption of ISO 20700 at CEN level as EN ISO 20700 in the course of 2018, superseding EN 16114.

Adoption EN 16114 to EN ISO 20700 – Ballot

On behalf of CEN/TC 381 I would like to inform CEN Members about the following current ballots on EN 16114 and its adoption to EN ISO 20700.
The initiative was started by the CEN TC 381 Secretariat on a request received by the Austrian Standards Body ASI.

Two actions need to be carried out by CEN/TC 381.
This is why we need the following two ballots covering different but joint subjects             (the related documents are: Doc. CEN/TC 381 N. 62, Doc. CEN/TC 381 N. 63,      available through the CEN standards bodies):

What is ISO 20700?

In June 2017, the international standard ISO 20700:2017 “Guidelines for management consultancy services“ was published.

ISO 20700 provides guidelines for the effective delivery of management consultancy services, drawing on knowledge and best practice from leading experts in the management consulting industry. Its aim is to improve transparency and understanding between clients and management consultancy service providers in order to achieve better results and reduce risk in consultancy projects.
